CALL TO ACTION: SENATE EXPECTED TO VOTE ON BILL CRIPPLING TEACHER TENURE

The Senate did not take up SS/SCS/SB 806 (Jane Cunningham) on April 10, but the bill is expected to be brought up for final passage (Third Reading vote) by roll call this week.   The Senate Substitute for SB 806 eliminates qualification and experience as factors in decisions regarding reduction in force and changes the probationary period for teachers from five to ten years.

MRTA opposes the bill as we did when we opposed HB 1740 earlier this year which contained elimination of Teacher Tenure.  SB 806 does nothing to help students or teachers and will eventually hurt the contributions to our retirement system because of lower salaries.  The bill just undermines a fair dismissal procedure that is working and leaves more teachers subject to arbitrary termination.

ACTION NEEDED:  Your help is needed! MNEA, MSTA and AFT of Missouri have asked for MRTA's help in opposing SS/SCS/SB/806. Please call, write or e-mail and urge your state senator to oppose SS/SCS/SB 806.

YOUR MESSAGE WILL HAVE A GREATER IMPACT IF YOU PERSONALIZE THE MESSAGE AND ADD YOUR OWN CONCERNS REGARDING THE BILL.

Also SCS SB 842 is still scheduled for a final roll call vote in the Senate this week. THANKS to those who have written their Senator on this government intrusion by the legislature.  SCS SB 842 eliminates the decision making ability of the PSRS/PEERS elected Board of Trustees. If you have not written please do so TODAY. Opposing SCS SB 842 is the priority because educator retirement is MRTA's priority.
